Lumped Element LC filter:Types,Advantages,Disadvantages
Advertisement
Introduction : Lumped Element LC filters, constructed from discrete inductors and capacitors, provide highly customizable low pass, high pass, band pass and band stop functions with design flexibility to match Butterworth, Chebyshev or Bessel characteristics. They are used for cost effective and compact filtering requirements in low to mid frequency range.
Types of Lumped LC filter
These filters can be designed into any of the standard filter types as follows. The figure depicts all the four variants of the lumped filter using L and C components.
-
Low Pass Filters (LPF): Pass lower frequencies and block higher ones.
-
High Pass Filters (HPF): Passes energy above specified cutoff frequency, rejects signals at frequencies lower than the cutoff frequency.
-
Band Pass Filters (BPF): filter passes energy within a certain bandwidth and rejects frequencies below and above this bandwidth.
-
Band Stop / Notch Filters (BSF): Reject a narrow band, passing frequencies on either side.
Technical Specifications
Following are the specifications or features to be considered for its selection.
- Insertion Loss
- Stopband Rejection
- Center Frequency
- Cut-off frequency
- Bandwidth
- Q-Factor
- Shape Factor
- Impedance
- Power handling capacity
Advantages of Lumped Element LC filter
Following are some of the benefits of lumped LC filter.
- Reasonable size at intermediate frequencies (500 MHz to 1 GHz).
- Supports many topologies
- Steep transition from passband to rejection
- Available in various configurations such as connectorized, PC mount, surface mount and drop-in.
- Multiple case styles
- Reasonable insertion loss
- Power handling acceptable for most needs
- Relatively easy to shift frequencies
Disadvantages of Lumped Element LC filter
Following are some of the drawbacks of lumped element filter.
- Can not achieve narrow bandwidths
- Elements become impratical to fabricate at high frequencies
- Limited power handling
- Bulky at low frequencies
- Lossy when large number of sections must be used
- Moderate to high cost
Conclusion: Lumped Element LC filters offer unmatched flexibility and simplicity for many RF and analog filtering needs. While they excel in size and cost, limitations arise at very higher frequencies. For many practical applications, however, they remain a foundational and versatile filter choice.
