This page provides a Wi-Fi 8 path loss calculator for Terahertz (THz) frequency links, incorporating models for free space path loss, molecular absorption and atmospheric attenuation.
EXAMPLE: Wi-Fi 8 PAth Loss Calculator:
Scenario : A Wi-Fi 8 AP tries to communicate with a device just 10 meters away using a 140 GHz signal.
-
INPUTS:
- d = 10 meters (Distance between transmitter and receiver)
- f = 140 GHz (Frequency of operation)
- k(f) = 0.01 dB/m (Molecular absorption coefficient at 140 GHz, typical for D-band)
-
OUTPUT:
- Free Space Path Loss = -84.63 dB
- Total Path Loss = -84.53 dB
Wi-Fi 8 Terahertz (THz) path loss Formula
The following formula or equation is used for the Wi-Fi 8 path loss calculation:

In the path loss formula above k(f) is the molecular absorption coefficient in dB/meter. This coefficient varies significantly with frequency, humidity, temperature and atmospheric conditions. This is the critical factor. For a calculator, you can use lookup values for potential Wi-Fi 8 bands: D-Band (around 140 GHz): k(f) ≈ 0.01 dB/m (A good transmission window) G-Band (around 220 GHz): k(f) ≈ 10+ dB/m (A “water wall” of absorption, unusable for distance) J-Band (around 300 GHz): k(f) ≈ 0.2 dB/m (Another potential window) Note: Please refer to academic papers and ITU-R recommendations for detailed absorption coefficients at specific frequencies and conditions.
