BLE Asset Tracking: Tags, Beacons, Gateways & Architecture

BLE asset tracking provides a low power wireless approach for monitoring equipment, inventory, tools, pallets, vehicles and other physical assets across warehouses, hospitals, factories, offices and retail environments. This article covers BLE asset tracking architecture, how tags and beacons work, gateway design, communication flow, hardware and implementation considerations.

A typical system combines BLE asset tags, beacons or advertising devices, scanners or locators, gateways, and cloud or edge software to collect device data and determine asset presence, proximity or location. Depending on the application, BLE advertising, GATT communication, signal strength measurements or direction finding capabilities can be used to build the tracking architecture.

Working of BLE Asset Tracking Architecture

The figure depicts generic architecture of BLE Asset Tracking use case. As shown it consists of BLE tags fixed on each of the assets to be tracked where as BLE beacons are spread across the area where assets are stored or kept.

BLE gateway is installed to track tags/beacons. One or more BLE gateways are used depending upon the floors in the building or warehouse. Following steps describe working of this BLE asset tracking system.

  • BLE tags/beacons periodically advertise their ID and signal strength (RSSI).
  • Gateway scans and collects the data. Later it sends these data to the cloud via Wi-Fi or cellular or ethernet connectivity.
  • Cloud processes location or asset information and provides tracking details or alerts. The same data can be used for analytics purpose.

Benefits of BLE Based Asset Tracking

  • Cost Effective & Easy to Deploy: BLE tags are highly affordable, and the system can easily leverage existing hardware like smartphones or low cost gateways for rapid deployment.

  • Ultra-Low Power Consumption: BLE asset tags require minimal energy, allowing small coin-cell batteries to operate continuously for months or even years without replacement.

Limitations of BLE Based Asset Tracking

  • Vulnerable to Interference: Because it operates in the crowded 2.4 GHz band, BLE signals can be disrupted by Wi-Fi, other Bluetooth devices, and physical obstacles like metal or liquid.

  • Limited Range & Precision: Standard BLE provides only room level accuracy (1-3 meters) over short ranges, requiring a dense and costly gateway network if highly precise pinpointing is needed.

Summary
