Bluetooth 6.3: New Features & Key Improvements

Bluetooth Version 6.3 focuses on refining the high accuracy distance measurement capabilities (using Channel Sounding) introduced in earlier v6.x releases, addressing protocol limitations and removing outdated security mechanisms.

Here are the specific features and changes introduced in Bluetooth 6.3, along with how it compares to its immediate predecessors.

New Features Introduced in Bluetooth 6.3

According to the “Core Specification Change History” (Part C, Section 17), Bluetooth 6.3 introduces the following three major areas of improvement.

  1. Channel Sounding Inline Phase Correction Term (PCT) Transfer (IPT):
  • This is an enhancement to the Channel Sounding feature (used for secure, high accuracy distance estimation between two devices).
  • It allows a “reflector” device to compensate for the phase of its outgoing radio carrier by using a measured Phase Correction Term (PCT). By transferring and applying this inline phase correction, the devices can more accurately calculate the communication channel’s transfer function, which directly improves the accuracy of phase based ranging (distance calculations).
  1. Channel Sounding PHY specific RTT Accuracy:
  • Another enhancement to Channel Sounding, specifically targeting Round-Trip Time (RTT) distance estimation.
  • It provides more granular, physical layer (PHY) - specific accuracy improvements for RTT measurements. Because Time of Flight (ToF) calculations rely heavily on exact Time of Departure (ToD) and Time of Arrival (ToA) measurements, tuning these accuracies to the specific PHY being used ensures more precise distance approximations.
  1. Running Out of Bits:
  • Listed as a major area of improvement, this addresses protocol level constraints regarding sequence numbering, bit exhaustion or boundary limits within the Bluetooth packet or Link Layer architecture.

Removed Features in Bluetooth 6.3

  • Data Signing: The Data Signing feature has been officially deprecated and completely removed in version 6.3.
