An interleaver rearranges the order of encoded data bits before modulation and transmission. This process spreads out consecutive bits. By doing so, it enhances the effectiveness of error correction mechanisms, such as convolutional codes, in recovering the original data.
In WiMAX, a block interleaver is typically used. This method writes data into a matrix row wise and reads it out column wise (or vice versa). This process effectively dispersing the data across time domain and frequency domains.
A deinterleaver performs the inverse operation at the receiver end. It restores the original order of the interleaved bits, preparing them for error correction decoding.
