What is Holographic Radio : Advantages and Disadvantages
Advertisement
Holographic radio is an advanced wireless communication concept that uses intelligent electromagnetic surfaces to dynamically control and direct radio waves. It aims to improve spectrum efficiency, coverage, and network capacity in future 6G systems. Advantages include enhanced signal control and efficiency, while disadvantages include high implementation complexity and deployment costs.
Key Features of Holographic Radio
Holographic radio, much like optical holography which uses light waves, leverages Electromagnetic (EM) Waves. In essence, it mirrors the principles of optical holography. To function, it needs an aperture antenna array capable of continuously receiving EM waves and measuring the phase of their wavefront.

As we know, holography records the EM field in space using the interference principle of EM waves. Figure 1 (refer to the image above) illustrates a block diagram of a holographic radio system. It comprises an antenna array, modulator array, optical processor & Photonic AI, and a detector array. The target EM field is reconstructed using information recorded through the interference of reference/signal waves.
This technology enables RF (Radio Frequency) holography, spatial spectral holography, spatial wave field synthesis, and more. Furthermore, it can precisely regulate the EM field of an entire physical space in a fully closed loop.
Benefits or Advantages of Holographic Radio
- Increased Spatial Multiplexing Efficiency: Holographic radio significantly boosts the efficiency of spatial multiplexing.
- Improved Spectral Efficiency: Spectral efficiency sees a considerable improvement.
- Enhanced Network Capacity: Network capacity experiences a boost.
- RF Convergence: It facilitates the RF convergence of imaging, positioning, and wireless communications.
Limitations of Holographic Radio
- AI Infrastructure Requirements: It demands a low latency, highly reliable, and scalable AI architecture to process the massive data generated by the holographic radio system.
Summary
Holographic radio enhances wireless communication using programmable electromagnetic surfaces. Advantages include improved spectrum utilization and coverage, while disadvantages include technical complexity and infrastructure requirements.
