EVDO stands for Evolution-Data Optimized, and EVDV stands for Evolution-Data and Voice. 1x refers to the same RF bandwidth used in the IS-95 standard. 1x also means 1xRTT, or 1 times Radio Transmission Technology. EV-DO holds the distinction of being the first high-speed broadband standard for mobile communication globally.
EVDO Rev. 0
When EV-DO Rev. 0 was initially introduced, mobile users experienced an average downlink throughput of approximately 400-600 Kbps. This was a significant improvement, offering data rates about 4 to 10 times faster compared to the CDMA-2000 version.
EVDO Rev. A Features
EVDO Rev. A brought several enhancements:
- Improvements in both uplink and downlink performance.
- Increased network capacity.
- Support for low-latency applications like VoIP (approximately 49 calls/sector), video telephony, and online gaming.
- Peak data rates of 3.1 Mbps on the downlink (DL) and 1.8 Mbps on the uplink (UL).
- Lower end-to-end call connection delay.
EVDO Rev. B Features
EVDO Rev. B offered further advancements:
- Higher data rates compared to Rev. A.
- Support for multiple carriers.
- Improved performance at cell boundaries.
