RSSI vs RSRP vs RSRQ vs SNR: Key Differences Explained

RSSI, RSRP, RSRQ, and SNR are widely used radio measurements for evaluating signal strength and signal quality in LTE and 5G wireless networks. Although these parameters are often used together, each represents a different aspect of radio performance. Understanding the differences between RSSI, RSRP, RSRQ, and SNR helps engineers optimize cellular coverage, improve network quality, troubleshoot connectivity issues, and analyze overall wireless communication performance.
RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator)
- RSSI represents the overall, total radio frequency power received by your phone’s antenna.
- While a high RSSI means there is a lot of signal energy present, it doesn’t mean it’s useful energy. It includes the signal you want, plus all the background noise and interference.
- It is measured in dBm.
RSRP (Reference Signal Received Power)
- RSRP isolates and measures the actual strength of the reference signal coming specifically from the cell tower you are connected to, filtering out the rest of the noise.
- This is a much more accurate representation of your coverage than RSSI. When your phone decides whether to switch from one cell tower to another (a handover), it primarily bases that decision on RSRP.
- It is measured in dBm.
- This is the true measure of your connection strength to the network.
RSRQ (Reference Signal Received Quality)
- RSRQ measures how clean and reliable the signal is.
- RSRQ is highly affected by network congestion and interference from neighboring cell towers. If too many people are using the same tower, your signal strength (RSRP) might remain high, but your quality (RSRQ) will plummet, leading to slow data speeds.
- It is measured in dB (decibels).
- Important Note : Good signal strength is useless without good signal quality.
SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) / SINR
- SNR directly compares the strength of your useful signal against the background noise and interference. It is often called SINR in LTE/5G i.e. Signal to Interference & Noise Ratio.
- A high SNR means your desired signal is towering over the background noise, resulting in a crystal clear connection and maximum data speeds. A low or negative SNR means the noise is drowning out your signal.
- It is measured in dB.
- Important Note : High SNR is the key to unlocking the fastest possible download and upload speeds.
