What Are Small Satellites? Uses & Key Manufacturers

Small satellites (often referred to as “smallsats”) represent a massive shift in how humanity operates in space. Historically, satellites were the size of school buses�massive, incredibly expensive, custom-built machines that took a decade to build and were placed in high Geostationary Orbit (GEO).

Smallsats, by contrast, are miniaturized spacecraft. They leverage advances in commercial electronics (similar to how smartphones shrank computers) to pack powerful communication and observation capabilities into small box size package.

Characteristics of Small Satellites

  • Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Deployment: Unlike legacy satellites, smallsats are primarily deployed in LEO. Being closer to Earth means lower latency (faster data transmission) and the ability to take higher-resolution images.

  • Scalable Constellations: This is the most crucial concept. One smallsat isn’t very useful on its own because it orbits the Earth so fast. Therefore, they are launched in “constellations”�networks of tens, hundreds, or thousands of interconnected satellites working together to blanket the globe.

  • Rapid Deployment & Cost-Effectiveness: Because they are smaller, lighter, and mass-produced, they are much cheaper to build. Furthermore, a single rocket launch can deploy dozens of smallsats at once, making access to space far more economical.

  • High Revisit Rates: Because there are so many of them in a constellation, a smallsat network can pass over (revisit) the exact same spot on Earth multiple times a day, providing near real-time data and imagery.
