Advantages of Parallel Interface | disadvantages of Parallel Interface
This page covers advantages and disadvantages of Parallel Interface. It mentions Parallel Interface advantages or benefits and Parallel Interface disadvantages or drawbacks.
What is Parallel Interface?
It is used for transmitting several data signals simultaneously over several parallel channels.
In parallel interface, multiple bits (usually 8) are transmitted simultaneously on different channels within the same cable.
It is used within a computer along the computer buses and between drive controller to hard disk drive.
The examples of parallel interface include ISA, ATA, PCI, SCSI, IEEE-488 etc. It is also widely used within ICs, peripheral buses, memory devices (RAM) etc.
Benefits or advantages of Parallel Interface
Following are the benefits or advantages of Parallel Interface:
➨It offers fast data communication between devices compare to serial interface.
Drawbacks or disadvantages of Parallel Interface
Following are the disadvantages of Parallel Interface:
➨It supports short distance communication between devices. This is due to
crosstalk between the parallel lines.
➨It uses more wires compare to serial interface and hence it is
costly and a bit complex to implement.
