VSWR monitoring sensors and trigger alarms are used in RF systems to continuously observe the VSWR on transmission line or antenna system and alert operators when it exceeds safe thresholds.
What is VSWR?
It is the short form of Voltage Standing Wave Ratio. It is a measure of how efficiently RF power is transmitted from source to a load through transmission line. Source can be referred as transmitter and load can be as antenna.
- VSWR equals 1:1 refers to perfect match i.e. no reflected power.
- Higher VSWR means more reflected power. This can damage the equipments.
VSWR Monitoring Sensor
It is a device or integrated part of RF system with following functions.
- Continuously measures forward power and reflected power
- Calculates return loss or VSWR
- Compares measured VSWR to preset threshold
Trigger Alarms
The system is designed such that when measured VSWR exceeds the threshold value, it triggers alarm (in various forms such as visual, audible or software based) and does following.
- May shut down transmitter automatically in order to protect it.
- Logs event for maintenance as well as remote monitoring
- Sends alerts via email, SNMP or control systems such as SCADA, NMS etc.
Applications
- Base Stations (GSM, LTE, 5G)
- Broadcast transmitters
- Radar Systems
- Satellite Up links
- Remote RF monitoring systems
Benefits
Following are some of the advantages of VSWR monitoring sensors.
- Prevents transmitter damage
- Supports predictive maintenance
- Maintains system efficiency
- Ensure reliable operation
