Cross Range Resolution | What is Cross Range Resolution of Radar

This page mentions what is Cross Range Resolution of Radar. It also mentions equation of cross range resolution.

This is ability of radar to differentiate multiple objects or targets present at the same range. It has limited dimension which is perpendicular to radar antenna axis.

There are two types of radar cross range:
• Azimuth or horizontal cross range
• Elevation or vertical cross range

Narrow beam emitted by radar antennas have ability to resolve very close targets. The cross range resolution is expressed in the equation below:

Δx = R*λ/Leff
Where,
Δx = Radar Cross Range Resolution (in meters)
R = Target Range
Leff = Effective length of antenna in direction where beamwidth is to be measured
λ = Wavelength
