Advantages of RF Jammer | Disadvantages of RF Jammer

This page covers advantages and disadvantages of RF Jammer. It mentions benefits or advantages of RF Jammer and drawbacks or disadvantages of RF Jammer.

What is RF Jammer ?

Introduction:
The radio frequency (RF) jamming device which is used to jam transmissions of other wireless systems and devices is called RF jammer.

The figure depicts RF jammer used to jam signals emitted from transmision station. As shown, RF jammer uses same frequency band and modulation schemes as used by transmission station whose signals are required to be jammed. Power output of RF jammer is kept higher than transmission station power for it to provide desired performance.

RF Jammer

Following are the specifications of RF Jammer considered for its selection.
• Frequency range : This field specify range of frequencies to be jammed by RF jammer.
• Output power : The power output of the RF jammer required to be set in order to block or attenuate (i.e. jam) the RF signal.
• Coverage area or range : Area around the jammer which is covered by RF jammer output.
• Selectivity : The ability of jammer to jam specific signal band and leave other frequency bands unaffected.
• RF jammer should be legal to use in the region. It should not block emergency communications or any other communication systems.
• Other features : Should be portable, durable, cheaper and easy to use

Benefits or advantages of RF Jammer

Following are the benefits or advantages of RF Jammer:
➨RF jammers can prevent unauthorized access to wireless devices planning to listen or intercept wireless communications. Hence it can provide security to sensitive information being transmitted/received using wireless systems.
➨RF jammers can prevent undesired surveillance by blocking signal transmitted by wireless cameras or any other monitoring devices.
➨RF jammers can be used mainly for military or defense applications such as jamming of enemy's wireless communication systems, to prevent use of remote controlled explosive devices etc.

Drawbacks or disadvantages of RF Jammer

Following are the drawbacks or disadvantages of RF Jammer:
➨RF jammer can only be used for military communications or government agencies or test and research applications etc.
➨It is illegal to use in most of the countries. If it is used without obtaining permission from concerned authorities than fines will be levied.
➨RF jammers can cause unintended interference to emergency communications, legitimate cellular communications, navigation systems such as GPS, wireless medical devices etc.
➨RF jammers support limited coverage area as per its design specification and hence it can not jam target outside its coverage range.
➨RF jammers can jam specific frequency range and wireless technologies for which they have been designed.
