What is Carbon Microphone?

Introduction:
It has been the very initial version of microphone consisting of carbon granules. Hence the name "carbon microphone". In this microphone, packing density of carbon granules increases or decreases based on sound pressure applied by human beings. When density increases, resistance between granules decreases or diminishes and vice versa.

Carbon Microphone

Thomas Edison is the first scientist who has patented its use in telephones in the year 1877. Early wired based telephone handsets were using carbon microphones in its construction. The figure-1 depicts carbon microphone consisting of diaphragm (fixed and flexible electrodes), carbon granules and battery.

Carbon Microphone working operation

The figure-2 depicts its connectivity with amplifier and speaker. The sound waves face diaphragm of the mic which produces electrical signal. This signal is amplified and coupled with speaker to produce sound waves back. Here carbon microphone converts sound waves to electrical signal and speaker does reverse of this.

Benefits or advantages of Carbon Microphone

Drawbacks or disadvantages of Carbon Microphone

Following are the drawbacks or disadvantages of Carbon Microphone:
➨It has high background noise and it will often produce cracking sound. It is not possible to eliminate this "carbon hiss".
➨It has poor frequency response.
➨It requires battery or other supply for its operation.
➨The carbon granules get damaged and sometimes fused together.
➨As shown it requires amplifier to amplify the signal to be reproduced at the speaker end.
➨Its bandwidth is extremely limited.

Conclusion: There are many advantages of Carbon Microphone but the disadvantages of Carbon Microphone outweigh their advantages compare to other latest microphones available today.
