Advantages of Biomass Energy | Disadvantages of Biomass Energy

This page covers advantages and disadvantages of Biomass Energy. It mentions Biomass Energy advantages and Biomass Energy disadvantages.

About Biomass Energy:
The organic materials, plant waste and animal waste are burned in the biomass boiler to produce biomass energy in the form of heat and electricity.

Advantages of Biomass Energy

Following are the advantages of Biomass Energy:
➨It is re-newable energy source due to the fact that they come from living sources which are always available in nature.
➨The carbon dioxide released by burning of biomass is again absorbed by it unlike fossil fuels. Hence the process is not harmful for the environment unlike burning of fossil fuel.
➨As biomass energy generation does not rely on fossil fuel, hence it is alterative and cost effective method.
➨The base material for burning i.e. plant, animal waste are abundantly available and hence it is cheap method.
➨It burns waste and converts it into useful energy. This process reduces landfills usually occupied by waste materials. This creates healthy atmosphere for the human beings.
➨Governments in few countries run schemes which benefits people who installs biomass boilers for renewable heat generation.

Disadvantages of Biomass Energy

Following are the disadvantages of Biomass Energy:
➨Initial deployment cost is higher compare to other methods due to high biomass boiler cost.
➨This method require more space. This is due to large space requirement of biomass boiler in comparison to gas boiler or oil boiler.
➨Biomass is less efficient for producing same heat. This is because it requires more energy i.e. more woods compare to quantity of fossil fuels. This means less fossil fuels produce same heat as produced in biomass process with more quantity of wood logs in the boiler.

Conclusion: Other than the initial investments, Biomass energy is considered to be very cost effective for heat and electricity generation in home and office premises.
