Benefits or advantages of 60GHz frequency
Following are the benefits or advantages of 60GHz frequency:
➨It offers sufficient bandwidth of 9 GHz total out of which different countries use different bands viz. US and Canada uses 7 GHz band from 57.05 GHz to 64.00 GHz.
➨Millimeter wave band allows use of higher EIRP (Effective Isotropic Radiated Power), which is about +40 dBm in USA and CANADA.
➨As it uses low power for transmission there is less likelihood of any interference. Hence it increases frequency reuse density.
➨Small size antennas or apertures are possible to realize at such frequencies. This leads to compact overall system packings and can deliver high radiation gains.
➨Due to low power and less distance communication, it provides highly secured communication. It reduces possibilities of theft by eavesdropping on nearby transmissions.
➨It has been standardized under IEEE 802.15.3c for WPAN applications, 802.11ad for WLAN applications, WirelessHD, 5G NR (New Radio) as per 3GPP release-15 etc. WirelessHD technology offers higher bandwidth (10 to 28 Gbps) with coverage of about 10 meters.
Drawbacks or disadvantages of 60GHz frequency
Following are the drawbacks or disadvantages of 60GHz frequency:
➨60GHz wireless system offers less range due to path loss encountered at this frequency. Free space path loss over length of 1 meter at 60 GHz is about 68 dB.
➨60GHz frequency can not penetrate through the walls.
➨This frequency incurs substantial RF absorption peak due to resonance of oxygen molecules. This is significant at greater than 100 meters range. Hence low range communication will not have any effect of this issue.
Though there are some issues with 60GHz frequency, it is widely used due to its benefits. Moreover some of these issues are make up with the use of high gain antenna array, proper link design and favourable installations.
