Smart Grid Architecture

These devices constantly record energy consumption data and transmit it locally typically via wireless signals to a neighborhood aggregator known as a Data Concentrator Unit (DCU), often mounted on utility poles. The DCU serves as a crucial intermediary, collecting and bundling data from multiple local smart meters to optimize transmission.

Smart Grid Architecture

Once aggregated, the DCU sends this bundled information across broader, high speed communication infrastructure, depicted as a DSL, Fiber Optic, or Wide Area Wireless network. This network acts as the bridge delivering data to the utility company’s central Data Centre. Within this hub, a Data Management System (DMS) securely processes and stores the information.

Finally, this ecosystem is made interactive through a Web Portal, allowing the utility company to monitor overall grid health, while enabling individual consumers to track their specific energy usage using personal devices (like laptops or smartphones) connected via local wired or wireless networks.
