S parameters are fundamental in RF engineering, representing how RF signals behave in a network. They describe the reflection and transmission characteristics of RF components and systems. The S-parameters (S11, S12, S21, S22) provide insights into the performance of devices such as amplifiers, filters and antennas. These parameters are measured using a vector network analyzer (VNA) and are essential for designing and analyzing RF circuits.
What are S Parameters
Following are the definitions of the S-parameters for N-port networks and 2-port networks.

- S11 : Input port reflection coefficient, representing the amount of signal reflected back from the input port.
- S12 : Reverse transmission coefficient, representing the amount of signal transmitted from the output port back to the input port.
- S21 : Forward transmission coefficient, representing the amount of signal transmitted from the input port to the output port.
- S22 : Output port reflection coefficient, representing the amount of signal reflected back from the output port.
S parameter measurements are done with one port excited and the others terminated in matched loads. The S-parameters are complex numbers, typically expressed in decibels (dB) for magnitude and degrees for phase. They are crucial for characterizing the performance of RF components and systems, enabling engineers to optimize designs for maximum efficiency and minimal signal loss.
- Case-1 : When port-1 is excited and port-2 is terminated in a matched load.
- Case-2 : When port-2 is excited and port-1 is terminated in a matched load.

S Parameters Calculation Example-1: (When incident wave is applied to port-1 and port-2 is terminated in a matched load)
Assume 2-port RF amplifier with 50 OHm reference impedance, and the following S-parameters at a specific frequency:
- Inputs : a1 = 1, b1 = 0.2, b2 = 3
- Outputs :S11 =0.2, S11 (dB) = -13.98, S21 = 3, S21 (dB) = 9.54
S Parameters Calculation Example-2: (When incident wave is applied to port-2 and port-1 is terminated in a matched load)
Assume 2-port RF amplifier with 50 OHm reference impedance, and the following S-parameters at a specific frequency:
- Inputs : a2 = 1, b1 = 0.05, b2 = 0.3
- Outputs : S12 = 0.05, S12 (dB) = -26.02, S22 = 0.3, S22 (dB) = -10.46
Conclusion
S-parameters are essential for characterizing RF components and systems, providing insights into reflection and transmission properties. S11 and S22 indicate how much signal is reflected back at the input and output ports, while S21 (output port 2 to input port 1) and S12 (input port 2 to output port 1) indicate how much signal is transmitted through the device. By analyzing these parameters, engineers can optimize their designs for better performance and efficiency.
