Example Calculation

Scenario : A 5G base station transmits with a power of 10 Watts (i.e. 40 dBm). It is connected to an antenna array with a gain of 24 dBi. The cable connecting them has a loss of 2 dB. Need to calculate the power density hitting a satellite receiver located 10 kilometers (10,000 meters) away from an NTN ground station.

Inputs:

  • Transmit power in dBm = +40 dBm
  • Antenna Gain = 24 dBi
  • Cable Loss = 2 dB
  • Distance from Transmitter for PFD measurement = 10000 meters

Outputs:

  • EIRP = 62 dBm or 32 dBW
  • ERP = 59.85 dBm
  • PFD = -59 dBW/m²
