What is Neural Dust Mote | Neural Dust Working Operation

This page describes Neural Dust Mode or sensor basics including working operation. It mentions applications of Neural dust mote or sensor.

The device works on the ultrasonic principle. The device consists of piezoelectric crystal which receives ultrasonic waves from external transducer and converts the same to electricity in order to power tiny on board transistors. It also reflects the ultrasonic waves which are captured by medical equipments and being analyzed to understand the behaviour of the human nerves or body parts. The working operation is similar to ultrasonic RFID tag. Figure-1 depicts simple neural dust sensor or mote device on a finger. It is as large as grain of sand.

Neural Dust Sensor

Following are the features of the device.
• Size: About 1 to 3 mm cube
• Location: can be implanted 1 cm below the skin
• Power: 120 µWatt emitted from transducer external to the device

Applications of Neural Dust Sensor

Following are the applications of Neural Dust Sensor:
• ECG/EMG signal analysis
• Therapeutic applications
• brain implants for paraplegic
