Advantages of Zero drift Op Amp | Disadvantages of Zero drift Op Amp

This page covers advantages and disadvantages of Zero drift Op Amp (Operational Amplifier). It mentions benefits or advantages of Zero drift Op Amp and drawbacks or disadvantages of Zero drift Op Amp.

What is Zero drift Op Amp ?

The operational amplifiers which are specifically designed to provide ultra low input offset voltage are known as zero drift Op amps. They provide near zero input offset voltage drift over time and temperature.

This op amp type minimizes input offset voltage and input offset voltage drift by automatically correcting offset voltage. They can be designed using any one of the following architectures.
• Auto zero op amp
• Chopper stabilized op amp
• Combination of above two

They are used in applications which require higher output accuracy at small differential voltages. The common applications of this type of operational amplifier include precision strain gauge, weight scales, thermopile, thermocouple, bridge sensor interface, current shunt measurement etc.

Zero drift op amp manufacturers include Analog devices, TI, ON Semiconductor, Microchip Technology Inc. , ABLIC Inc. etc.

Benefits or advantages of Zero drift Op Amp

Following are the benefits or advantages of Zero drift Op Amp:
➨It offers low input offset voltage.
➨It offers high CMRR.
➨It offers high PSRR.
➨It offers high open loop gain.
➨It offers low drift over temperature and time.
➨These Op amps deliver no 1/f noise, low distortion and low broadband noise.
➨It is simple to construct at very cheap cost.
➨Auto zero type offers wide bandwidth and low ripple.
➨Chopper stabilized type offers low power consumption.

Drawbacks or disadvantages of Zero drift Op Amp

Following are the drawbacks or disadvantages of Zero drift Op Amp:
➨Auto zero amplifier offer higher power consumption.
➨Chopper stabilized amplifier produce higher ripple.
➨Auto zero produce high low frequency noise due to aliasing.

Conclusion : Choice of zero drift operational amplifier depends on auto zero design, chopper stabilized design or combination of both based on various factors such as bandwidth, noise, power consumption, ripple etc.
