Advantages of Symphony Link | disadvantages of Symphony Link
This page covers advantages and disadvantages of Symphony Link. It mentions Symphony Link advantages or benefits and Symphony Link disadvantages or drawbacks.
What is Symphony Link?
Introduction:
Symphony Link is wireless LPWA (Low Power Wide Area) system developed by Link Labs to overcome limitations of LoRaWAN system.
It is built on LoRa CSS physical layer technology.
Following are the features of Symphony Link technology.
• It is the standard protocol developed by Link Labs targetted to
meet LoRa range with higher performance.
• Protocol used is Synchronous unlike ALOHA.
• It uses channel size of 125 kHz.
• It offers high sensitivity of about -137 dBm.
• It uses both unlicensed and licensed frequency spectrum from 150 MHz to 1 GHz.
• It operates without the network server.
• Symphony Link gateway is an 8 channel sub-GHz base station.
Benefits or advantages of Symphony Link
Following are the benefits or advantages of Symphony Link:
➨It offers guaranteed message receipt. This is possible as MAC layer delivers acknowledgement for every message in
the uplink and downlink direction.
➨The firmware can be upgraded over the air after devices are already deployed
in the symphony Link network.
➨There is no duty cycle limit as it uses LBT (Adaptive Frequency Agility) band.
➨It uses synchronous protocol and hence repeaters allow users to expand range without compromising on latency
requirement.
➨QoS allows priority based traffic routing and hence important traffics are served first over other low priority
traffic.
➨Device configurations are not required to be performed individually.
Configuration is same for all the devices of same types.
Moreover key exchange is managed via advanced PKI based Diffie Hellman AES achitecture.
➨Symphony Link nodes have balanced link budget as they adjust their transmit power, spreading factor (SF) and modulation
rate before transmission based on its distance from gateway. Due to ADR (Adaptive Data Rate), Symphony Link offers
optimizated capacity better than LoraWAN. By using ADR, devices adapt modulation rate based on channel fading observed.
➨Over the air wireless channel is not breakable with the use of PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) in Symphony Link
architecture. It also prevents spoofing.
➨It offers multiple gateway coexistance and interference mitigation.
➨It offers four times higher capacity compare to LoRaWAN.
➨It implements multicast session keys which allow addressing of group of devices.
Drawbacks or disadvantages of Symphony Link
Following are the drawbacks or disadvantages of Symphony Link:
➨It requires LoRa chipsets and symphony link software which adds dependency.
➨It is being used by small community of users.
