Advantages of MOSFET | disadvantages of MOSFET

This page covers advantages and disadvantages of MOSFET. It mentions MOSFET advantages or benefits and MOSFET disadvantages or drawbacks.

What is MOSFET?

Introduction:
MOSFET is the short form of Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor. It uses MIS diode as its basic component for construction. MIS (Metal Insulator Semiconductor) is a 3-layer structure which uses insulator oxides (SiO2, Al2O3, Si3N4) between Al (Aluminium) and semiconductor (Si/Ge/GaAs). When Al-SiO2-Si is used to form MIS structure, it is referred as MOSFET.

MOSFET structure

MOSFET has four terminals e.g. Gate, Source, Drain and Substrate. There are two types of MOSFET viz. n-channel MOSFET and p-channel MOSFET. Moreover there are two categories in each of these types. As a result, MOSFET operates in any of the following modes.
• n-channel Enhancement Mode (OFF)
• n-channel depletion Mode (ON)
• p-channel Enhancement Mode (OFF)
• p-channel depletion Mode (ON)

Benefits or advantages of MOSFET

Following are the benefits or advantages of MOSFET:
➨They can be operated in either enhancement mode or depletion mode.
➨They have much higher input impedance compare to JFET.
➨They have high drain resistance due to lower resistance of channel.
➨They are easy to manufacture.
➨They support high speed of operation compare to JFETs.

Drawbacks or disadvantages of MOSFET

Following are the disadvantages of MOSFET:
➨In MOSFET, the layer between Gate and Channel is very fragile which is vulnerable to electro-static damage during installation. It requires well designed circuit to avoid the issue.
➨MOSFET is very susceptible to overload voltages, hence special handling is required during installation.
