Advantages of Geothermal Energy | Disadvantages of Geothermal Energy

This page covers advantages and disadvantages of Geothermal Energy and its basics. It mentions benefits or advantages of Geothermal Energy and drawbacks or disadvantages of Geothermal Energy.

What is Geothermal energy ?

The energy which is derived from the earth's heat is known as geothermal energy. It is generated in wide range from shallow to deep part of the earth where hot water and rocks are present. The geothermal energy of the earth's crust originates from original formation of planet and from radioactive decay of materials. The geothermal plant uses both water and heat as input resources.

Geothermal energy renewable system

The figure depicts geothermal power plant which is used to generate electric power from geothermal power. As shown steam is used to rotate turbine which activates the generator and consecutively electricity is produced. It usually requires higher temperature in the range from 300oF to 700oF.

Advantages of Geothermal Energy

Following are the benefits or advantages of Geothermal Energy:
➨It is environment friendly energy source.
➨It is highly reliable renewable energy source.
➨It offers higher efficiency.
➨It is flexible in design.
➨It has lower maintenance cost as system requires little maintenance.
➨Pumps can store heat for later use.

Disadvantages of Geothermal Energy

Following are the drawbacks or disadvantages of Geothermal Energy:
➨Greenhouse gases are emitted during its extraction from the ground.
➨Geothermal sources are getting depleted.
➨The specific location used for its extraction may cool down after some time.
➨Technological irresponsibility to explore magma heat source.
➨It incurs higher start up cost.
➨Some plants use lots of water which creates water pollution.
➨Sources are very close to volcanic activity which is harmful for plant operation.
➨Geothermal reservoirs are difficult to be found. Moreover it is hard to implement geothermal systems in bigger cities.
