Electric vehicles use electrical energy stored in batteries to run electric motors. Unlike combustion engine based vehicles, the electric vehicles do not generate any exhaust gases. Electric Vehicles (EVs) are environmental friendly. There are numerous reasons due to which people prefer to use Electric Vehicles (EVs) such as fast and smooth drive, emission free, smart and innovative. We will discuss different types of electric vehicles with their benefits and drawbacks.
The history of electric vehicles goes back to 1830s when first electric carriage was built. The Electric car market is gaining momentum due to introduction of Tesla Roadster in 2008. Tesla Inc. has ambition to commercialize electric vehicles so that people will adopt greener path. The other popular electric vehicles include BMW, Ford, Volkswagen, Nissan, Kia, chevrolet and so on.
What are Electric Vehicles?
Electric vehicles house three major components viz. controller, battery and electric motor. Let us understand general working principle of electric vehicle. When pedal is applied, controller collects energy from the battery. Controller delivers proper amount of electrical energy to the motor which transforms it into mechanical energy. Due to this, wheels turn and vehicle moves. Electrical energy required to charge the battery is produced from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, biogas or hydroelectric plants.
Following are the types of electric vehicles.
Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) : This vehicle runs on electric motor and battery and does not require traditional IC (Internal Combustion) engine. It requires external electricity source to recharge the battery.
Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) : This vehicle type uses electric motor and battery and requires power grid for battery charging. It also uses IC engine to recharge the battery. It uses IC engine in place of motor when battery is low.
Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) : It houses two drive systems which are complementary viz. electric motor with battery and gasoline engine with fuel tank. It does not need grid for charging. All the required energy has been derived from gasoline and re-generative braking.
Benefits or advantages of Electric Vehicles
Following are the benefits or advantages of Electric Vehicles of different types listed above:
➨BEV : No emissions, Fast speed, smooth acceleration, no gas/oil changes, can be charged at home, low operating cost etc.
➨PHEV : It offers longer range compare to BEV, less gas consumption and fewer emissions than gas only vehicle etc.
➨HEV : It offers longer range than BEV, less gas consumption and fewer emissions than gas only vehicle tc.
Drawbacks or disadvantages of Electric Vehicles
Following are the drawbacks or disadvantages of Electric Vehicles of different types listed above:
➨BEV : It offers shorter range compare to gasoline vehicles, Slightly expensive compare to gasoline vehicles etc.
➨PHEV : It still produces emissions, complex mechanics due to use of gasoline and electric designs, expensive to operate, can not be charged at home conveniently etc.
