Advantages of Dynamic DNS | disadvantages of Dynamic DNS
This page covers advantages and disadvantages of Dynamic DNS and its basics. It mentions benefits or advantages of Dynamic DNS and drawbacks or disadvantages of Dynamic DNS.
What is Dynamic DNS?
Introduction:
As we know DNS helps to load the web page with the help of DNS names which are called URL.
All the web sites hosted will have unique IP addresses.
When we type URL in the internet browser, it sends DNS query to the DNS server which responds with DNS record containing
proper IP address. This IP address helps in opening the web page in the browser.
Unlike static DNS explained above, dynamic DNS updates DNS records automatically without any manual intervention. DDNS works in combination with DHCP protocol. DHCP is introduced to avoid manual configurations of IP addresses for the hosts. This is taken care by DHCP servers.
Using DDNS protocol, hosts can notify their respective DDNS servers about dynamic IP addresses they have received from DHCP servers or by self configurations. TSIG (Transaction Signature) is an authentication protocol used to secure DDNS updates from attackers.
Refer DNS vs DHCP >> which describes difference between DNS and DHCP.
To have dynamic DNS work, following things are needed.
1. Domain name is required to be setup on easyDNS 2. Download and setup dynamic DNS
client on the computer.
Benefits or advantages of Dynamic DNS
Following are the benefits or advantages of Dynamic DNS:
➨It eliminates considerable time required to update static addresses manually when network
configuration changes.
➨Changed IP addresses are automatically configured against URLs and hence it does not affect
accessibility.
➨The number of addresses are used as required at one time rather than using one for all the possible users of the
IP address. This saves space. Hence it is economical.
➨It does not require network administrators for reconfiguration of settings.
➨It is very comfortable for users point of view as any IP address changes will not affect any of
their activities.
Drawbacks or disadvantages of Dynamic DNS
Following are the drawbacks or disadvantages of Dynamic DNS:
➨It is less reliable due to lack of static IP addresses and domain name mappings.
This may cause issues in specific scenarios.
➨Dynamic DNS services alone can not make any guarantee about the
device you are attempting to connect is actually your own.
➨Also refer disadvantages of DHCP for more information as DHCP
assigns IP addresses dynamically to the computer/device attempting to use internet.
