Advantages of DVB-S2 | Disadvantages of DVB-S2
This page covers advantages and disadvantages of DVB-S2 and its basics. It mentions benefits or advantages of DVB-S2 and drawbacks or disadvantages of DVB-S2.
What is DVB-S2?
Introduction:
It is digital television broadcast standard successor to DVB-S standard.
DVB-S2 stands for Digital Video Broadcasting satellite second generation.
Initially it was developed in the year 2003 by DVB project.
Later in 2005, it was ratified by ETSI and documented in EN 302307.

Following new features are added in DVB-S2 which helps it replace DVB-S and DVB-DSNG technologies.
• Powerful FEC based on LDPC codes
• Support for wide coding rates, from 1/4 up to 9/10
• New modulation schemes which offers 2-5 bits/second/Hz spectrum efficiency
• Supports three spectrum shapes using different roll-off factors viz. 0.2, 0.25, 0.35
• Supports flexible stream adapter, suitable to operate with single and
multiple TS (Transport Stream) on same carrier with different modulation/FEC
• VCM (Variable Coding & Modulation) / ACM (Adaptive Coding & Modulation) types allow to optimise coding/ modulation
on frame by frame basis.
The common applications of DVB-S2 include broadcasting services (TV. HDTV, FSS, BSS), digital TV contribution & satellite news gathering, VSATs, interactive data services including internet access, data content distribution/trunking etc. Refer difference between DVB-S2 and DVB-S standards.
Benefits or advantages of DVB-S2
Following are the benefits or advantages of DVB-S2:
➨It offers better forward error correction (FEC) performance which is about
2-2.5 dB higher than DVB-S. Hence it is more robust.
➨It offers higher spectral efficiency which is about 30% better than DVB-S.
It uses less satellite capacity and consecutively save money.
➨It offers increased data throughput in a given bandwidth (e.g. 36 MHz) than DVB-S.
➨It supports increased number of channels.
➨It supports increased coverage area.
➨Smaller dish antenna is required.
➨Use of ACM in DVB-S2 offers rain fade counter measures on forward link.
It also allows optimum match of transmitter waveform to the channel conditions.
➨The extension of DVB-S2 called as DVB-S2X offers very low C/N and many new features.
Drawbacks or disadvantages of DVB-S2
Following are the drawbacks or disadvantages of DVB-S2:
➨Implementation complexity is very high than DVB-S type.
➨DVB-S2 is still evolving with constantly changing technologies.
➨Millions of DVB-S devices have been deployed across the world. It
is challenging to upgrade all of these devices with DVB-S2.
➨Upgradation process from DVB-S to DVB-S2 requires replacement of
set-top boxes and need to have TVs with DVB-S2 integrated tuners.
