Polymer LED Construction, Working, Advantages, Disadvantages | PolyLED

This Polymer LED tutorial covers Polymer LED basics including construction, working operation and applications. It mentions Polymer LED advantages and Polymer LED disadvantages.

We know that polymers are very light in weight and flexible. It is used as semiconductor in the development of LED. The type of LED which uses polymer is known as polymer LED. The full form is polymer LED is Polymer Light Emitting Diode.

There are many applications of polymer LED. The few among them are bumpers used in the car, vests designed as bullet proof, electronic newspaper, color display etc.

Polymer LED Construction | Polymer LED working operation

Polymer LED Structure

The figure-1 depicts Polymer LED structure. It is special type of OLED. It uses polymer as one of its layer.

As shown it consists of cathode, polymer, anode and substrate. It emits light when it is connected to external voltage. It uses polymers such as poly(e.g. p-phenylene vinylene) and polyfluorene in the construction of polymer LED. Hence it is known as PolyLED. Refer working of OLED in order to know how this special type of OLED works.

Polymer LED Advantages

Following are the advantages of Polymer LED:
• They are very efficient and hence produces good amount of light with small power consumption.
• Light-Weight
• Thin and Flexible
• High temperature range
• Large viewing angle
• Shorter response time
• smooth brightness
• Very low production/manufacturing costs
• High contrast
• Large single emitter and arbitrary structures

Polymer LED Disadvantages

Following are the disadvantages of Polymer LED:
• Emitter part is sensitive to oxidation and humidity.
• Due to color shift, different polymers have different lifetimes.
• Polymer LEDs have short lifetime at high luminescence.

Polymer LED Applications

Following are the applications of Polymer LED:
• It is used as display in mobile phones, laptops, TVs and advertising space. It is widely used in lighting industry for variety of applications.
• Used in the car
• Used in vests
• Used in e-newspaper

This Polymer LED tutorial is useful for beginners as well as advanced enthusiasts.
