Mobile WiMAX 16e handover types

This page covers mobile wimax handover types as per IEEE 802.16e standard. It covers intra ASN handover and inter ASN handover.

There are two types of wimax standards such as fixed wimax and mobile wimax. Fixed wimax follows IEEE 802.16-2004 OFDM specifications, while mobile wimax follows IEEE 802.16e OFDMA specifications.

The mobile wimax architecture supports mechanism for intra ASN handover, inter ASN handover and roaming between NSPs. This helps in seamless handover at vehicular speeds and also at micro/macro mobility.

As we know handover or handoff will help moving mobile suscriber to be in continuous call without any disruption of the service inspite of going out of reach of the base station's coverage. This includes both CS call as well as PS call. CS(Circuit Switched) call is used for voice communication and PS(packet switched) call is used for data communication(e.g. internet).

Intra ASN handover

This handover occurs between Base stations(BSs) within the same ASN coverage. The BSs can be interfaced either with same ASN Gateways or with different ASN Gateways. These gateways should be within the coverage of same ASN.

WiMAX interfaces R6 and R8 are used for intra ASN handover. R4 interface type is used when target BS is connected with another ASN gateway.

In intra ASN handover, no IP address update is needed.

Inter ASN handover

wimax inter ASN handover

An inter ASN handover occurs between Base Stations (BSs) connected with different ASNs. In this type of mobile wimax handover, ASN Gateways need to coordinate for seamless handover. The two ways data can be handled in inter ASN handover. The methods are anchoring and re-anchoring. Anchoring does not involve any path updates while re-anchoring involve path updates.
