haptic sensor basics, comparison between haptic sensor types

This page covers haptic sensor basics and mention haptic sensor types. It mentions comparison between haptic sensors viz. linear resonant actuator,Eccentric rotating mass vibration motor(ERM) and Piezo.

Haptic is the term which refers to sense of touch. This concept is used to provide feedback to electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets using the vibration. These uses two actuators such as linear resonant actuators and Eccentric rotating mass vibration motors. Hence the there are two types of haptic sensors.

Haptic Sensor Types

Let us understand principle behind these types of sensors.

Linear Resonant Actuators(LRA): This sensor is based on movement of mass which causes repeated displacement in only one direction of axis of linear movement. The working operation is similar to function of loudspeaker. As we know loudspeaker is used to produce audio waves proportional to the displacement. Unlike loudspeaker which is designed to operate over broad range of frequencies, LRA is tuned to operate at one resonant frequency.

LRA type of haptic sensor uses magnetic fields and electrical currents to create the force. Unlike loudspeaker, here voice coil will remain stationary and magnetic mass moves instead. In the design of sensor, mass is attached to the spring which will help in returning to the centre position. Driving the magnetic mass up and down will cause displacement of LRA type of haptic sensor and hence the vibration force.

Eccentric Rotating Mass Vibration Motors(ERMs): In this type of haptic sensor, vibrations are created in two different directions perpendicular to each other with reference to rotation axis.

ERM sensor has off centre load. The rotation of the load results into centripetal force which causes the movement of the motor. The rotation is created by application of current to the armature windings attached to the motor shaft. This will result into creation of force which will cause the shaft to rotate. To ensure rotation will continue in the same direction, current in the windings is reversed. This is achieved using static metal brushes which connect to a commutator. This commutator rotates with the shaft and windings.
