GSM Common Control Channels (CCCHs) are vital for communication between the network and mobile subscribers (MSs). They serve two primary purposes: conveying information from the network to the MSs, and providing access to the network for the MSs.
CCCH stands for Common Control Channel. It is a group of logical channels which facilitate essential signaling between MS and BTS (Base Transceiver Station).
GSM CCCHs comprise the following channels viz. PCH, RACH, AGCH and CBCH. These channels are very useful during initial stages of communication between MS and base station for call setup, paging and network access.
Components of CCCH in GSM
- PCH (Paging Channel) : Used in downlink by network to alert MS of incoming messages or calls.
- RACH (Random Access Channel) : Used by MS in uplink to initiate communication with network e.g. call initiation or responding to page.
- AGCH (Access Grant Channel) : Used by network in the downlink to assign dedicated signaling channel to MS in response to its request on RACH.
- CBCH (Cell Broadcast Channel) : Used in the downlink to facilitate broadcast message transmission e.g. public warnings or informational texts.
Summary
The CCCH plays crucial role in managing the initial interactions between the mobile device and network. It ensures efficient communication setup and information dis-semination.
