What is Social distancing followed for COVID-19 or CORONA virus?

Introduction:
The act of maintaining distance from fellow human beings while shopping, walking, running or any where else is known as social distancing. This term has become more popular recently with the outbreak of COVID-19.

COVID-19 is infectious disease caused by most recently discovered coronavirus. This new virus and disease were unknown before its outbreak in Wuhan, China in december 2019. Coronaviruses are large family of viruses which may cause illness in humans or animals.

In humans, several coronaviruses cause respiratory infections ranging from common cold to more severe diseases such as MERS and SARS. The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, fatigue and dry cough. Some patients may also have aches & pains, runny nose, sore throat, shortness of breath, diarrhoea etc.

Social distancing is aimed to reduce frequency of contact by increasing physical distance between persons. This reduces risks of person to person transmission or community transmission.

In social distancing one has to keep oneself atleast 6 feet away from other people in your household or in community.

Social distancing measures followed in order to control spread of contagious illnesses include following.
• Self isolation
• Self quarantine
• School closure
• Workplace closure
• Cordon sanitaire
• Cancellation of mass gatherings at events, pubs, disco, theaters, clubs, religious places, musical concerts etc.
