Advantages of Green IT | Disadvantages of Green IT

This page covers advantages and disadvantages of Green IT and its components. It mentions benefits or advantages of Green IT and drawbacks or disadvantages of Green IT.

Introduction:
Due to advancement in electronics industry and deployment of wireless technologies, usage of IT devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, PCs have increased. Moreover it has become everyday need of human lives.

These device consume more power and have effects on our environment. In order to address these issues, we have developed Green IT or Green computing. These systems minimize energy consumption and give us environment friendly devices.

What is Green IT and What are Green IT components ?

Green IT aims to reduce carbon footprint generated by information systems while allowing them to save money. It includes carbon free computing, solar computing and quiet computing.

Following are the major functions of Green IT or Green Computing.
• To reduce energy consumption
• To reduce effect of global warming
• To reduce usage of natural resources
• To reduce usage of hazardous materials
• Recycling of e-waste
• Promotion of bio-degradability
• Virtualization
• More usage of energy efficient products

Green IT Components

The figure-1 depicts key Green IT components which include cloud computing, green networking, green data centers and virtualization.

Green Data Centers : The idea is to minimize carbon footprints, recycling of e-waste of these centers, appropriate building material and paints which produce less emission, usage of electric and hybrid vehicles by these data centers, usage of evaporative cooling, photovoltaic technology and heat pumps etc.

Green networking : The networking of devices which are green and energy efficient such that they minimize resource utilization is known as green networking. These devices handle energy efficient communication strategies.
For example, use of sleep mode in routers during low traffic hours.

Cloud computing : It provides demand computing services such as applications to storage amd processing power over internet and on payment basis.
For example, usage of single system on the cloud with installation of OS (Operating System) as per need ; rather than buying multiple systems with different OSs (Operating Systems).

Virtualization : There are different types of virtualization which include server virtualization, application virtualization, network virtualization, storage virtualization and desktop virtualization. Using virtualization, one or more computer systems can run on single set of physical hardware.
For example, application virtualization allows applications to run independent of underlying host OS. Storage virtualization allows multiple storage devices to be combined as one large storage device and so on.

Benefits or advantages of Green IT

Following are the benefits or advantages of Green IT:
➨It is environment friendly as techniques have much lower carbon dioxide emissions.
➨It consumes less power.
➨It is cost effective. Hence it saves more money per year as users need to pay as per usage.
➨It reduces disposal of equipments as it adopts reuse, recycle and refurbish techniques.
➨By using telecommuting, it avoids unnecessary travels and increases profit margins.
➨Computers and other peripherals are developed using bamboo and recyclable plastics. These materials have very less impact on environments.

Drawbacks or disadvantages of Green IT

Following are the drawbacks or disadvantages of Green IT:
➨It requires high start up cost.
➨The affordable Green IT systems are not readily available for everyone as they are in experimental stages.
➨It sacrifices performance for battery life improvement.
➨It requires good number of human resources with appropriate skills which are lacking.
➨The success of Green IT requires more time.
