Advantages of Channel Bonding | Disadvantages of Channel Bonding

This page covers advantages and disadvantages of Channel Bonding of wifi, cellular and ADSL. It mentions benefits or advantages of Channel Bonding and drawbacks or disadvantages of Channel Bonding.

What is Channel Bonding?

Introduction:
Channel bonding refers to aggregation of more than one internet connections in order to provide fast internet experience to the users. The multiple connections can be either from the same operators using same technologies or from different operators using different technologies.

Channel bonding combines multiple connections into single connection. It splits the web traffic at packet level among many connections. It is very useful for the user to stream movie having very large size.

Channel bonding hardware and software fulfills splitting and combining of the internet traffic as needed. It is used at client side and server side.

Channel Bonding in WiFi

Example #1 : The three non-overlapping 11n wifi channels operating at 2.4 GHz band are combined to provide 54 Mbps speed. This is known as wifi channel bonding due to its operation in wifi network. The figure depicts two 20 MHz channels are combined to form single 40 MHz channel to deliver fast wifi connection.

Channel Bonding

Example #2 : Two cheaper ADSL connections are combined into one using channel bonding instead of taking expensive single fiber optic broadband connection.

Example #3 : WiFi, Cellular (i.e. LTE) and Ethernet connections are bonded together to offer higher internet speed experience.

Benefits or advantages of Channel Bonding

Following are the benefits or advantages of Channel Bonding:
➨It offers uninterrupted service in case of failover. If one service provider connection fails, internet is available from backup connection from other service provider if two connections from different service providers are already available.
➨Channel bonding offers higher speed of internet connection which is almost double than single connection.
➨Channel bonding offers fast browsing experience to the users.
➨Channel bonding software apps are available for free download on trial basis.
➨It is very simple to implement and/or deploy.

Drawbacks or disadvantages of Channel Bonding

Following are the drawbacks or disadvantages of Channel Bonding:
➨The channel bonding requires additional internet connection from same operator or different operator.
➨The user data from multiple internet connections are routed to channel bonding hardware company for processing. This leads to security threats as visibility of data is available with third party.
➨Channel bonding and hardware and software require subscription from user. Hence it costs extra in addition to new connection.
