USB test solution providers, vendors | USB conformance tests

This page mentions USB test solution providers or vendors. It mentions USB test equipments or software used for testing USB devices as per USB conformance tests.

Introduction: The USB interface is similar to RS232. It stands for Universal Serial Bus. It supports peer to peer communication between host and peripheral device. There are various versions of USB which include USB 2.0, USB 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen1/Gen2, USB 3.2 and USB 4.0. Following table mentions major features of various USB versions.

USB versions Features
USB 2.0 Data Rate : 480 Mbps
Power Output : 2.5W
USB 3.0 Data Rate : 4800 Mbps (i.e. 4.8 Gbps)
Power Output : 4.5W (Gen1)
USB 3.1 Gen1 Data Rate : 5 Gbps
Power Output : 4.5W (Gen1)
USB 3.1 Gen2 Data Rate : 10 Gbps
Power Output : 100W (Gen2)
USB 3.2 Data Rate : 5/10/20 Gbps
Power Output : Up to 100W
USB 4.0 Data Rate : 40 Gbps (Max.)
Power Output : Up to 100 Watts

USB Conformance tests

As mentioned, USB interface supports different data transfer speeds viz. Low speed, Full speed and High speed. Different tests are specified based on speed as mentioned in USB-IF electrical test specifications. Following are the USB transmitter and receiver tests. The figure depicts typical USB test setup used for testing USB DUT (Device Under Test).

Transmitter tests as mentioned below are conducted using high speed oscilloscope with wide bandwidth.
• Data rate test
• Eye Diagrams and Spectrum mask tests
• Rise and Fall time
• Monotonic data transitions over vertical openings
• Output voltage when either D+ or D- is driven high
• Output voltage when either D+ or D- is not being driven
• Differential output impedance

USB Test Setup

Receiver tests as mentioned below are conducted using compatible generator which can generate specific test signals into USB DUT (Device Under Test) with defined amplitudes as required.
• Data rate test
• Compliance as per different masks
• Reliably receive data in the presence of common mode (CM) voltage
• Implementation of transmission envelope detector (ED) with desired receiver tests
