What is 5G New Radio | What is 5G NR | 5G New Radio Features
This page describes basic features of 5G NR i.e. 5G New Radio technology. It mentions 5G new radio (5G NR) standard and radio network related information.
What is 5G New Radio (5G NR):
It is the evolution to LTE Advanced and LTE Advanced Pro wireless technologies.
It supports diverse spectrum, diverse services and diverse deployments.
It provides major performance, cost and efficiency improvements from
previous wireless technologies. Moreover it incorporates backward compatible
enhancements to the next generation wireless devices.
The 5G NR standard is published with release 15 and above.
5G technology handles 1000 times more traffic compare to 4G and at 10X faster speed. Five technologies are merged together to make 5G achieve these specifications. They are millimeter waves, small cell, massive MIMO, beamforming and full duplex.
Specification / Feature | 5G New Radio support |
---|---|
3GPP Standard | Release 15 and beyond |
Frequency spectrums | licensed, shared licensed, unlicensed |
Frequency Bands (probable) | • Below 1 GHz • Below 6 GHz (Band 41 i.e. 2496 to 2690 MHz ; Band 42 i.e. 3400 to 3600 MHz) • Above 6 GHz (15, 28, 39, 70 to 80 GHz); |
Bandwidth (BW) | 20 MHz (wide coverage), 80 MHz (Small cell) , 160 MHz (Unlicensed), 500 MHz (mmwave-About 28 GHz) |
OFDM Subcarrier Spacing | 15KHz for 20MHz BW 30KHz for 80MHz BW 60KHz for 160MHz BW 120KHz for 500MHz BW |
Data Rate | About 10Gbps (peak data rate per user) About 500Mbps (sustained data rate per user) |
Multiple Access Technique (Used for IoT) | RSMA (Resource Spread Multiple Access), it is non-orthogonal and grant free multiple access scheme |
Applications or Use cases | • eMBB(Enhanced Mobile Broadband) • Massive Machine Type Communication e.g. Internet of Things (IoT), NB-IoT etc. • D2D-Device to Device • ultra reliable communication with low latency e.g. remote surgery, vehicle communication to avoid crash etc. |
TTI (Transmission Time Interval) | Scalable |
Subframe | New Self contained TDD subframe, which accommodates different topologies and different services in the same frequency channel. |
Support for future 5G services which are not defined yet. | Provision for blank time/frequency resources to add future services to have seamless integration |
cloud services | supported the same in sensors, smartphones, vehicles etc. |
Duplexing techniques | FDD, TDD, Half duplex |
Latency | Less than 1ms |
Network topologies | Device to Device, Mesh, Relay |
MIMO/BF | • Supports massive MIMO • Adaptive Beamforming • Beam Tracking techniques |
