What is the difference between EPS and EPC in LTE | EPS vs EPC
This page compares LTE EPS vs EPC and mentions functional difference between EPS and EPC in LTE system.
Introduction: 4G (4th Generation) LTE (Long Term Evolution) has been introduced first with 3GPP release-8. It has evolved further with release-15 and above to add many more features in the initial release. 4G network consists of radio functionality part and core functionality part. Radio function is based on LTE 3GPP standards and core network is based on EPC 3GPP standards.
➨EPS stands for Evolved Packet System where as EPC stands for Evolved Packet Core.
➨EPS is combination of E-UTRAN, EPC and UE. UE (User Equipment) refers to any device controlled by the user such as mobile subscriber,
tablet, laptop, USB dongle etc. The figure depicts EPS architecture in which UE is connected
with EPC over E-UTRAN network. Evolved node-B (i.e. eNodeB) is the base station of LTE radio system.
➨EPS architecture consists of User Equipment (UE), radio network (E-UTRAN), core network (EPC) and IP network (IMS).
➨EPC consists of SGW (Serving gateway) , PGW (Packet data network gateway), MME (Mobility Management Entity) and HSS (Home Subscriber Station) .
It is connected with external networks such as IMS (IP Multimedia Core Network Subsystem).
