Data over light basics | What is LiFi?
This page covers data over light(LiFi) basics. It mentions what is LiFi and describes how LiFi system works.
LiFi is basically a wireless networking technology utilizing light as a carrier for data transmission. It uses LED bulbs as source of light at the transmit end and photo detector as photo-receptor at the receive end.
Following are the features of LiFi system:
• Initially it used to deliver about 150 Mbps data rate.
Now with advanced LED technologies it is possible to achieve 10 Gbps.
This is comparable to data speed achieved using IEEE
802.11ad WiFi standard.
• It is secured way of communication due to its LOS operation.
Moreover it can not be penetrated in the walls.
• It provides interference free networking system.
Due this fact, it is widely used in hospitals as well as aviation systems.
How Li-Fi Works?
The figure depicts the LiFi system transmitter and receiver part.
As shown transmitter part consists of LED lamp which is driven by the Lamp driver.
The data interfacing with the internet as well as server is done with the help of
driver as shown.
The receiver part consists of photo detector, amplifier and data processing circuitry.
The received data is fed to the computer and processed depending upon different applications.
This parts together known as LiFi dongle.
This is how the LiFi system works.
