What is Blood Pressure sensor | How does Blood Pressure sensor work

This page describes Blood Pressure sensor basics and its features and specifications. It mentions Blood Pressure sensor working operation or principle.

Introduction: When our coronary heart beats, it contracts and pushes blood through our arteries. This force creates stress on our arteries. Blood pressure is the stress of the blood inside our arteries. Blood pressure is recorded as numbers i.e. systolic pressure over diastolic pressure.

What is Blood Pressure sensor ?

Definition: The sensor or device used to sense the blood pressure of our body is called blood pressure sensor. It is very essential to measure blood pressure at regular intervals as excessive blood stress results into serious diseases such as heart attack, kidney sickness etc. Moreover high blood pressure does not have any symptoms and measuring it is the only way to know.

Blood Pressure Sensor

The figure depicts one such blood pressure sensor or meter from Sunrom. The instrument which measures blood pressure is also known as Sphygmomanometer. Following table mentions blood pressure level categories with its measured values.

Indication Systolic (mm/Hg) Diastolic (mm/Hg)
Hypotension <90 <60
Desired 90-119 60-79
Prehypertension 120-139 80-89
Stage 1 Hypertension 140-159 90-99
Stage 2 Hypertension 160-179 100-109
Hypertensive Crisis >=180 >=110

Technical specifications of Blood Pressure sensor product code 1437 manufactured by Sunrom, Gujarat India are as follows.
• Operating voltage : +5V, 200 mA regulated
• Wire length : About 2 meters
• Output format : Serial data at 9600 baud with 8 data bits, no parity and 1 stop bit (ASCII format).
• Output parameters : Systolic, Diastolic and Pulse rate Readings
• Sensor pins : Tx-OUT, +5V and GND

Blood Pressure sensor working operation

The blood pressure sensor provides output in 8 bit ASCII format which ranges from 000 to 255. The three parameters viz. systolic, diastolic and pulse rate are separated by comma and space. The last byte of packet is always 0x0A in hex and 10 in decimal so one can view each reading from sensor on new line.

Let us understand working of Blood Pressure sensor.
➨Position yourself properly to take the measurement and rest for 5 minutes. Sit in chair with both feet flat on the ground and back straight.
➨Place your arm at the level of your heart or chest and do not talk during measurement.
➨Wear measuring tap (i.e. cuff) midway between elbow and shoulder.
➨Switch ON the meter and it offers readings in few minutes.
➨Sensor can also be connected to RS232 port of the computer for viewing readings using terminal software.

Blood Pressure sensor interfacing arduino

Following diagram depicts Blood Pressure sensor interfacing with Arduino board. Following are the connections between pins of both Blood Pressure sensor and arduino board.
Vcc (Blood Pressure sensor side) - 5V (Arduino side)
GND - GND
Tx-OUT of blood pressure module - RxD pin of arduino or microcontroller
