Advantages of Shared Aperture Antenna | disadvantages of Shared Aperture Antenna
This page covers advantages and disadvantages of Shared Aperture Antenna. It mentions Shared Aperture Antenna advantages or benefits and Shared Aperture Antenna disadvantages or drawbacks.
What is Shared Aperture Antenna?
Introduction:
It is one of the class of phased array antenna.
This antenna type combines functionalities of the several antennas into a single aperture.
These different sub arrays mounted on the same aperture are used for different applications
on time/frequency shared basis.
The space and weight is a primary concern in military aircrafts, ships and land vehicles. Due to this fact, several antenna functionalities are combined into single antenna known as shared aperture antenna to meet the reduced space and weight requirements.
Benefits or advantages of Shared Aperture Antenna
Following are the benefits or advantages of Shared Aperture Antenna:
➨The shared aperture antenna houses functionalities of many individual antennas on a single
aperture such as reflector antenna, phased array etc. This reduces cost to a great extent.
➨It reduces RCS requirement of a military aircraft.
➨It reduces weight and volume of overall aircraft system. This is
due to the fact that many antennas having requirements to be mounted outside the aircraft skin are eliminated.
Drawbacks or disadvantages of Shared Aperture Antenna
Following are the disadvantages of Shared Aperture Antenna:
➨It is complex in design as many antenna functionalities need to be tested for
simultaneous operations without any interference.
