What is LPDDR5 RAM?

Introduction:
The LPDDR5 is low power volatile (DRAM) device memory standard defined for storage of code, applications and data. It is SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory) which consumes less power. It is targetted for use in mobile devices such as phones, tablets and laptops.

It supports 16 bit or 32 bit wide channels. JEDEC has published standards for these low power DRAMs.

The figure-1 shows chart of LPDDR generations from LPDDR1 to LPDDR5 with speed (Mbps) and year of introduction. The memory from LPDDR1 to LPDDR5 supports data transfer rate (Mbps) in increasing order. LPDDR1 supports 400 Mbps where as LPDDR5 supports 6400 Mbps.

LPDDR5 Supported Modems

The figure-2 depicts samsung 990 and snapdragon 865 modem chipsets which support LPDDR5 RAM memory. LPDDR5 uses CK ("Clock"), WCK ("Write Clock") and RDQS ("Read Data Strobe") in differential mode in order to provide maximum performance. It changes these differential signals into single ended signals when it is running at low data rates (i.e. below 1600 Mbps) to save power. Benefits or advantages of LPDDR5 RAM

Following are the benefits or advantages of LPDDR5 RAM:
➨It offers higher speed of data transfer. In LPDDR5 it has almost doubled compare to previous versions.
➨It consumes very less power. Hence battery can last for longer duration.
➨It offers higher data bandwidth with the addition of more parallel data paths due to use of multi-bank group mode feature.
➨It offers improved memory performance for the users. It has become easy to take pictures with mobile phones as high memory performance makes data transmission faster and reduces delay in taking pictures.
➨LPDDR5 reduces cloud game latency which ensures real time synchronization of AI (Artificial Intelligence) computing data.
➨New clocking schemes make LPDDR5 controllers and Physical layers implementation easier.

There are no specific drawbacks or disadvantages of LPDDR5 DRAM except the fact that the successive versions are superior to previous versions due to advancement in the ASIC technology.
