Advantages of HSDPA | Disadvantages of HSDPA

This page covers advantages and disadvantages of HSDPA. It mentions HSDPA advantages or benefits and HSDPA disadvantages or drawbacks. HSDPA stands for High Speed Downlink Packet Access.

What is HSDPA?

Introduction:
The HSDPA is high speed downlink data service which can be deployed on existing 3G network.
Following are the features of HSDPA.
• 3GPP standard: Release 5
• Direction: From network (Node-B) to Mobile Station
• Data Rate: 14.4 Mbps/7.2 Mbps
• Modulation: QPSK, 16QAM
• Speed/coverage radius: Supports speed of 480 Kbps upto 47 meters where as supports speed of 10.7 Mbps upto 15 meters.
• The figure-1 depicts development phases of HSPA.

Benefits or advantages of HSDPA

Following are the benefits or advantages of HSDPA:
➨It offers trunking gain of radio capacity.
➨It offers highest data load in downlink direction.
➨It is easy for operators to launch HSDPA as they can utilize existing UMTS network.
➨It is more spectrum efficient compare to EDGE/UMTS. It supports higher spectrum efficiency in units of data/MHz.
➨It supports higher data speed usually 14.4 Mbps in indoor DAS system.
➨Mobile operators can compete with WiFi using HSDPA as they even need not require distributed APs as used in WiFi network.

Drawbacks or disadvantages of HSDPA

Following are the drawbacks or disadvantages of HSDPA:
➨The HSDPA will cause 3G network to run on higher load rate constantly. This increases noise on existing UMTS CH and consecutively degrades the UMTS capacity.
➨No soft handover and hence pico-cells overlapping in the same building will generate self interference.
➨HSDPA supports provide usage of UMTS network only on the downlink. For uplink data transmission HSUPA is required to be deployed. Refer HSDPA vs HSUPA >> for difference between HSDPA and HSUPA.
