Advantages of DVB-S2X | Disadvantages of DVB-S2X

This page covers advantages and disadvantages of DVB-S2X and its basics. It mentions benefits or advantages of DVB-S2X and drawbacks or disadvantages of DVB-S2X.

What is DVB-S2X?

Introduction:
DVB-S2X is the extension of DVB-S2 standard. It adds many new features to DVB-S2 standard. The common applications are DTH (Direct To Home), VSAT, DSNG, 5G cellular services, mobile applications etc. DVB-S2X is backward compatible to DVB-S2 mode. The ETSI EN 302 307-2 (part-2) document defines specifications of DVB second generation. It covers frame structure, channel coding, modulation etc.

DVB-S Evolution Timeline

DVB-S2X uses LDPC and BCH as inner and outer code FEC techniques similar to DVB-S2. The major features of DVB-S2X are as follows.
• More granularity in modulation/coding modes
• Filter roll off factors of 5%, 10%, 20%, 25%, 35% are supported
• Supports QPSK, 8PSK, 8/16/32 APSK, 64/ 128/ 256 APSK (added)
• Channel bonding upto 3 channels
• New constellations for linear/ nonlinear channels
• Super Frame option
• Supports 116 MODCODS, up to 256 APSK 11/15, three frame sizes (normal, short, medium)
• More scrambling options for co-channel interference

Benefits or advantages of DVB-S2X

Following are the benefits or advantages of DVB-S2X:
➨It supports very low C/N typically down to -10dB.
➨It uses smaller antennas due to technology enhancements.
➨It offers efficiency gain upto 51% compare to DVB-S2.
➨Improved filtering is possible. Hence small carrier spacing is possible with the use of DVB-S2X.
➨Channel bonding helps in combining several different carriers to increase efficiency for UHD TV services.
➨Scrambling options help to counter co-channel interference.

Drawbacks or disadvantages of DVB-S2X

Following are the drawbacks or disadvantages of DVB-S2X:
➨Like DVB-S2, implementation complexity is higher than DVB-S standard.
➨Upgradation process is challenging as millions of devices with DVB-S standard have already been deployed throughout the world.
➨The devices with DVB-S2X are higher in cost compare to DVB-S2 and previous versions.
➨The DVB-S2X standard retains DVB-S2 main architecture with some changes. This makes it non-backward compatible with DVB-S2 standard.
