Wireless Terminology

| RF Transceiver | The device comprising both RF Transmitter and RF receiver is referred as RF Transceiver. Transmitter transmits the radio frequency signal into the air via antenna. Receiver receives the radio frequency signal from the space based on RF tuning value. | RF Transceiver |
| RF Power Amplifier | The device which is used to amplify the RF signal provided at its input and delivers the amplified output. It is set based on RF link calculation so that loss across the path can be compensated using RF Power Amplifier. | RF Power Amplifier |
| Satellite Modem | The equipment used to modulate and demodulate the signal. The modem interfaced with satellite is referred as satellite modem. | Satellite modem design |
| Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) | Low Noise Amplifier is the device used to amplify the signal received from the space which is very weak. In addition to amplifying the desired signal, it does less amplification to the noisy signal. Hence it is known as LNA. | LNA |
| Modulator | Modulator is the device used to modulate baseband information signal(voice or data) and will provide modulated output. There are different types of modulation viz. amplitude, frequency and phase. | what is modulation |
| VSAT | It is referred as Very Small Aperture Terminal used to interface with satellite located above the Earth. It provides connectivity to remote areas where in laying cable is difficult. Based on frequency band of operation, different diameters of the antenna is used. VSAT is used to provide service for small number of voice and data channels. | VSAT system overview |
| Satellite | It is used to provide connectivity to remote inaccessible areas. The satellite does frequency conversion and amplification with the help of satellite transponder. | what is a satellite |
| Wireless | The medium without wires is referred as wireless medium. Electromagnetic waves are used as medium to carry the low frequency information signals (voice or data) | what is wireless |
| FEC | It refers to Forward Error Correction. It is used to provide correction to received erroneous packets. Hence FEC based systems will provide better BER at the same SNR compare to non-FEC systems. The convolution encoder, turbo coding are FEC techniques. | Forward Error Correction |
| MIMO | Multiple Input Multiple Output, the technique used to transmit and receive EM waves simultaneously using multiple antennas. It is used for two main functionalities viz. to increase the coverage and to increase the data rate. To increase data rate two different data symbols are simultaneously transmitted. | CRC | Cyclic Redundancy Check, the technique referred as error detection. Using CRC receiver will come to know whether the received packet or frame is valid or not. Valid refers to no corruption in the received packet. | CRC |
| Filter | The device which passes certain values of frequencies and stops some is referred as filter. The basic filter is made of lumped elements such as inductors, capacitors etc. Based on functionalities needed there will be low pass filter, high pass filter, band pass filter and band stop filter. | RF Filter design |
