Difference between Opto Triac and Opto Isolator | Opto Triac vs Opto Isolator

This page compares Opto Triac vs Opto Isolator and mentions difference between Opto Triac and Opto Isolator.

Opto Triac

opto triac

The figure-1 depicts Opto Triac circuit symbol. It is 4 layer and 3 terminal device. It blocks current in OFF state. It conducts current in both the directions when it is triggered by gate pulse. The triac which operates based on light signal is known as opto triac. The LED is used as shown which provides light for triac to conduct. LED emits light when powered ON.

Opto Isolator

opto isolator

Figure 2 depicts opto isolator which uses LED and phototransistor. The device prevents and blocks light reflections back to the device where it is used. This prevents damage due to high optical power. The isolation and insertion loss are the two main parameters to be considered while selecting opto-isolator for use.
