DECT vs PHS-Difference between DECT and PHS digital cordless telephones

This page DECT vs PHS describes difference between DECT and PHS digital cordless telephones. DECT is the short form of Digital Enhanced Cordless Telephone. PHS is the short form of Personal Handy Phone System.

DECT

DECT system was developed by European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) in the year 1993. The system has been used across the world and mainly used in Europe. It is also used outside Europe in the countries such as Australia, Asia and South America. Multiple DECT compliant handsets can be connected with a base station in the system. Like other cellular systems handover is supported by the DECT.

The major applications of DECT system are as follows.
• Domestic systems connect with base station which in turn interfaced with PSTN in the backbone.
• Business systems connect with PBX with fixed radio parts. Handsets get connected with the base stations dynamically.
• Cellular like systems for public in high deployment density based application.
• As local loop as replacement of wired connection between subscriber and PSTN.

The following are features of DECT standard. •  Mobile frequency range in MHz : 1880 to 1900
•  Duplex Scheme : TDD
•  Multiple Access Technique : TDMA/FDM
•  No. of channels : 10
•  No. of users per channel : 12
•  Spacing between RF channels (MHz) : 1.728
•  Modulation type : GFSK with 0.5 Gaussian Filter
•  Channel data bit rate (Mbps) : 1.152
Refer DECT tutorial for more information.

PHS

This system is a cordless telephone system which works in mobile cellular environment. It supports handover between cells. PHS cells are smaller unlike GSM. PHS is ideal for urban dense deployment areas while GSM is ideal for rural areas.

The following are features of PHS standard. •  Mobile frequency range in MHz : 1895 to 1918
•  Duplex Scheme : TDD
•  Multiple Access Technique : TDMA/FDM
•  No. of channels : 300
•  No. of users per channel : 4
•  Spacing between RF channels (KHz) : 300
•  Modulation type : pi/4 DQPSK
•  Channel data bit rate : 384 Kbps

The difference between PHS, DECT and GSM based cellular system is as follows:
DECT cells have radius of 25-100 meters
GSM cells have radius of 2-10Km
PHS cells have radius of 10-100meters

Initially PHS was developed to compete with GSM by the NTT, Japan. It failed due to limitation of coverage and unavailability of roaming. Modern PHS systems support value added services e.g. emails, internet, text messages etc.
