Electronic Terminology

This page on Electronic terminology describes terms related to Electronics domain. It covers BJT, FET, Diac, Triac, JUGFET, MOSFET, electrolytic capacitor, inductor, capacitor, transducer, microphone, thermistor, relay, reed switch, OP-AMP, transformer, battery, SCR, variable resistor and variable capacitor etc.

Electronic Terms Basic description RF Wireless World Reference
BJT It stands for Bipolar Junction Transistor. BJT is a current controlled device. It has three terminals emitter, base and collector. BJT
FET It stands for Field Effect Transistor. FET is a voltage controlled device. It has three terminals Source, Gate and Drain. FET
Diac Made of 2 zener diodes interconnected back to back. Diac
Triac made of two SCRs connected in parallel and in opposite direction. Triac
JUGFET Full form is Junction Gate FET. JUGFET
MOSFET Full form is Metal Oxide Semiconductor FET. MOSFET
Electrolytic capacitor The device used to store charge in its metal body with polarity is referred as Electrolytic capacitor. Electrolytic Capacitor
capacitor The device used to store charge is referred as capacitor. There are many types of capacitor depending upon the application. Capacitor basics
Inductor The coil of wire with or without core is referred as inductor. When current is passed through it, magnetic field is generated. It has reactance which equal to 2*pi*f*L , hence at higher frequency, impedance will be higher and it will be able to block the frequencies. DC or low frequency will be easily passed through due to lower impedance. Inductor basics
Transducer The device which converts one form of signal to the other form is referred as transducer. For example, microphone, speaker, sensors etc. are transducers. Transducer
Microphone Microphone is a type of transducer which converts acoustic signal into the electrical signal form. Microphone types and basics
Thermistor The device whose resistance changes with temperature is referred as thermistor. Thermistor
Relay The type of switch operated by magnet is referred as relay. It can be made on or off based on passing current through it. Relay
Reed Switch It is also type of switch used for fast switching applications in telephone line exchanges. Reed Switch
Battery The device used to provide DC power. Mainly used to power the mobile phones, tablets, laptops etc. Battery
SCR The full form is Silicon Controlled Rectifier. SCR
Op-AMP Operational amplifier(OP-AMP) is used in many applications due to its high gain, high input and low output impedances. OP-AMP
Transformer It converts AC voltage from one value to the other value. This is achieved with two coils having different number of turns referred as primary and secondary coils. Transformer basics and types
Resistor The device which dissipates power when current is passed through it. It basically provides resistance to the flow of current and hence limits the current. resistor basics
Variable resistor The resistor whose resistance value can be changed manually or through software is referred as variable resistor. Variable resistor
Variable capacitor The capacitor whose capacitance value can be changed is referred as variable capacitor. Variable capacitor
